A SELF-CONTROLLED PERSON
Each human has emotions created for him to play an important
function. Happiness, anger, sadness, jealousy, loneliness and many others are
so called revealer of what happens to the environment. They are not bad but
they need right control in order to keep ourselves intact. There are times that
we experience different emotions and our job is to use them to proper purpose
so that it will end up helpful instead of hurtful to us and those surrounds us.
The Bible teaches us to live a self-controlled life. The verse
in Proverbs 25:8 says, “He that hath no
rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without
walls”. The word rule or self-control is atsar
in Hebrew means to restrain, retain. It also means restraint exercised over
one’s own impulses, emotions or desires. Another meaning of self-control is the
ability not to show your feelings or not do the things that your feelings make
you want to do. In order to become a self-controlled person, we need to have
learn some important principles.
Firstly, we need to check our attitude. Our state of mind or feelings are vital part of
our life. Being able be sensitive f what
we feed our minds is extremely helpful for controlling them. A sober
mind keeps us for a lot of trouble. When we are in control of our mindset, it
means we can choose what to think to or not. God gave us a sound mind. Allowing
Godly thinking can be our daily habit. It helps us be relieves of any negative
thoughts that might make us feel down.
When we have goals, what makes it successful is the attitude
we use while working on it. It’s easy to give up when being discouraged. It
make us feel powerless. Checking our attitude towards work help us to make a
balance of things and work out on the things which might give signs of failure.
Secondly, we need to have our ability awaken. We all have strengths we can give to bless
the world. It is a seed of greatness that needs cultivation. In doing our work,
wisdom from the Lord is necessary to stir up our hidden potential. They should
not lie dormant but must be used to its fullest. Working heartily makes a
wonderful result. It means that we do it because we love the Lord and the
people we are serving.
Our gifts are part of our purpose for existence. They help us
accomplish God’s intention for life. With self-discipline, we can make our gift
and excellent blessing to those we serve. With a joyful heart, we can give a
quality service for others.
Lastly, we need to have assurance
of protection. Guidance and counsel help us be protected from future danger. They
serve as defense from any possible threat or temptation. Most of us suffer when
we neglect protection in a form of advice, instruction or command. To fear
the Lord makes us decide rightly. If God is our highest authority, our natural
tendency it to seek His principle regarding the thing in which our decision is
to be made, whether big or small. Enduring trials makes us
perseverant. Any hardship might be unpleasant for a moment but when we are able
to endure it, may bring the fruit of our labor.
We are assure to be protected by God when we control
ourselves. There are lots of temptations around but they end up bringing evil
results to us. When we control ourselves, our future is bright and blessings
await.
Self-control might be hard when we rely on our own effort.
The Holy Spirit can be our help when we ask Him. As long as we don’t neglect
His still small voice when facing an issue, we will end up successful in our
godly goals. We need to remember that self-control consist of attitude, ability
and assurance because it is a help for us rather than a slavery. The more we
control ourselves, the more freedom we will enjoy after we conquer any
temptation or endure trials.
